Hi - I’m Laurel.

Dr. Laurel Korotana, Child Clinical Psychologist

My Training & Experience

I completed my PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Calgary. During this time, I received training at various community mental health services and pediatric hospital clinics. I subsequently completed my residency with the Alberta Children's Hospital Pediatric and Child Clinical Psychology program. During my residency, I worked in outpatient and day-treatment hospital programs supporting children and adolescents with a range of  presenting concerns, including diverse medical and neurodevelopmental differences, histories of abuse and trauma, and complex mental health profiles. After completing my residency, I worked as a Registered Psychologist at Alberta Children’s Hospital, supporting patients seen across the Neurosciences, Sleep, and Pain clinics. More recently, I moved into private practice, where I am eager to expand my practice and serve families across Alberta.

My Approach

I am a strong advocate for the importance of evidence-based treatment - i.e., treatment that has been proven by research to be effective. Currently, I have training and experience providing Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI). I also integrate components of attachment theory, self-compassion work, and mind-body practices, and value staying informed of the latest research on evidence-based determinants of mental health.

Finally, I recognize that effective psychological treatment requires more than a one-size-fits all approach. I seek to tailor treatment to each client’s unique life circumstances, developmental differences, familial or cultural values, and personal goals. I believe psychological strategies can be of benefit to everyone – sometimes, we just need to increase connection and creativity to support strategies to best fit individuals and their families.
